Social and Spiritual Organization of the Sumtrhang Choeje
The Foundation and its Objectives
Bhutan Nyö Foundation was registered with the Commission for Religious Organizations (CRO) in October 2017 under the Religious Organizations Act of Bhutan. It serves as the charitable and organizational body of Sumtrhang Monastery, originally founded in the 1220s by Nyö Gyelwa Lhanangpa and his son Nyöton Trulzhig Choje, and sustained through successive hereditary incumbents known as the Sumtrhang Choeje.
The Foundation is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of Bhutan’s ancient spiritual traditions and rich cultural heritage, ensuring their continuity for future generations.
Nyö Foundation of Bhutan is founded with aims & Objective:

To restore Sumtrhang Monastery and revive its spiritual and cultural education by developing it into a center of learning and practice.

To sustain and promote Buddhist teachings, with a special focus on Sumtrhang’s Vajra Kilaya tradition, through study and research.

To preserve and promote Bhutan’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage, safeguarding indigenous traditions and values rooted in Buddhist principles through documentation, education, and development.

To encourage green and organic initiatives that support environmental awareness and sustainable agriculture, guided by Buddhist principles of harmony with nature and non-human beings.

To transform spiritual service and volunteerism into meaningful social benefit through compassionate, community-focused activities across Bhutan.
